Why Cats Love a Cardboard Cat House with Scratcher

Cats are hunters, but they are also prey. That dual instinct is why cats are naturally drawn to spaces that feel both sheltered and aware... places where they can rest and still keep an eye on what is happening around them.

This understanding is why we at Americat Company designed our cardboard cat house with scratcher. The house gives cats a cozy resting place, a secure hideout, a lookout spot, and a scratching surface all in one. The balance of privacy and visibility helps cats feel safe and in control of their environment.

Spacious Cat Resting Space

Cats love this cardboard cat house with scratcher, because it feels like their own little den.

Cats instinctively seek sheltered spaces to feel protected. A cardboard cat house gives them a quiet place to rest, observe the room, and step away from household activity when they need a break.

During the design process, we paid close attention to how cats enter, exit, turn around, and settle into resting spots, because comfort starts with the details. The wide openings and tall roof allow cats to move in and out with ease. Inside, the long scratcher gives cats the room to stretch, reposition, nap, and scratch throughout the day.

The feeling of being covered can be especially comforting for newly adopted cats, shy cats, older cats, or cats living in busy or multi-cat homes. Even confident cats enjoy a retreat where they can relax!

Two Openings for Easy Entry and Exit

One design feature that matters more than many cat parents realize is having two entrances. This cardboard cat house with scratcher includes one opening in the front and another on the side, because cats do not like feeling cornered or trapped, even when relaxing.

When cats know they have another way out, they are more willing to settle in and claim the space as their own. For many cats, that sense of control is what turns this cardboard cat house into a favorite hiding and resting spot.

This feature is especially important in multi-cat homes. A cat can comfortably relax inside without worrying about another cat blocking the only exit.

This cardboard cat house with scratcher is designed so that you can choose during assembly whether the side entrance is on the right or the left to best fit your space.

Window and Door Views Help Cats Feel Safe

The front opening, side opening, and additional window cutout, give cats a way to stay aware of their surroundings while still feeling tucked away. Cats love this balance: hidden and protected, but still able to see what is happening around them.

This is why the window and door views matter so much. The multiple viewing angles help the house feel like a secure lookout spot. With this cat scratcher house, your cat gets privacy without losing the ability to quietly monitor the room.

Watching cats peek through the little window is also one of the cutest parts of the design!

Built-In Cardboard Cat Scratcher

Scratching is one of the most natural things cats do. According to the Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine, cats scratch to stretch, maintain their claws, communicate territory, and release emotional energy. This is exactly why combining a hideout with a scratching surface works so well.

The built-in corrugated cardboard scratcher gives cats a satisfying place to scratch while also helping them claim the space as their own. Cats have scent glands in their paws, so scratching is one way they mark territory and feel more secure in their environment.

Many cats scratch before they lie down or settle in, which makes a cat scratcher house that combines a scratcher and resting space especially appealing.

Thick Cardboard for Lasting Structure

Cats are naturally drawn to cardboard because of the tree-like texture. But not all cardboard is created equal.

During product development, I bought cardboard cat houses from other brands. I found the cardboard to be very flimsy. The tabs bent as I put the houses together. The houses would even fall over when my cats were rambunctious.

We wanted to make a much better option! So, we designed a sturdier cardboard cat house with scratcher using double-wall cardboard instead of single-wall cardboard commonly used by other brands.

That matters because a cat house needs to feel sturdy for cats to trust entering and also stand up to daily use.

Cat parents love products that solve multiple problems at once. A well-made cat scratcher house can help redirect scratching away from furniture, give cats a dedicated place to relax, and add meaningful enrichment to an indoor home.

The cardboard cat house with scratcher by Americat Company is made in the USA, easy to assemble, and durable enough for everyday use.

Design details that may seem small to us can make a big difference to our cats. When a product is built for feline instincts, cats will choose to try it on their own, claim it as theirs, and keep returning to it again and again.
